To access the e-prescribing tool from the patient encounter, simply go to Prescriptions on the left-hand side of the screen:
That will bring you to this screen:
Which then goes to this screen, which takes you to the Dr First portal:
This gives you basic information regarding the patient, the provider and diagnoses. In the Patient screen, you can select your pharmacy by choosing the magnifying glass:
Within this window, you can choose from the Practice List of pharmacies, which searches for pharmacies with the first 3 digits of your practice ZIP code, a Favorite List or All Pharmacies. You can filter your options by type of pharmacy as well. You can use any of the parameters to the right to filter as well:
Once you have chosen your search parameter and clicked Search you will receive a list of pharmacies that match your choices:
You can have up to five default pharmacies per patient:
There are two ways to edit or add to the allergy information. Either by going to the drop-down menu and choosing Allergies, or going to the Allergy section in the main screen and choosing the plus (+) sign:
Once you have chosen the method, you will see the screen to add the allergy:
Once you have added the appropriate fields you will click save and it will add your allergen to the list:
The next area to look at is the diagnosis box. TotalMD will bring across any diagnoses in the patient encounter and you can choose any/all that apply.
You will see a prescription history for this patient by clicking the Show Medication History button:
The patient consent button will have to be marked Yes for this to work:
If the product you are searching for is not in the history, you can search for and choose the new product you wish to prescribe:
Once you choose the product, you will be given dosage choices:
Once you choose the strength you will be given a wizard to walk through the dosing instructions:
If the patient has an allergy to or the medicine is otherwise contraindicated, you will receive a warning box:
There are several ways to prescribe from within TotalMD, the first is to go the Rx button on the right:
This will bring you to the Prescription Medication screen, which will show you the information you have already entered:
The second option is to go to the Favorites:
From the Favorites Screen you can see the Organization’s Favorites, the Provider’s Favorites and recent prescriptions for this patient:
The third way to create a prescription is to go to Create New Prescription:
You will then see the Select Medication for Prescription screen:
You can then type in the first letters of the product:
Or you can click on the Favorites star and get the Favorites screen:
Once you have your medication, you will choose it:
You will then receive the same screen we saw earlier, where you can change the provider and pharmacy choices:
It also allows you to make all of the choices shown earlier in the same manner:
You can then Review your work:
If there are errors in the prescription, or it falls outside of normal parameters, you will get this message:
After reading your alerts, you can either prescribe it as written, or click Do Not Prescribe this Medication to go back and edit the prescription. Once you have decided that the prescription reads as needed, click Prescribe or Prescribe Anyway if you have a warning you wish to ignore. You will then see the Prescription Review screen, where you can save the Pending Rx:
The back button will allow you to go back one screen and make changes. The cancel button will delete the prescription entirely.
The prescriptions can be sent from two places. First the Prescription Management screen:
You will notice the stars to the right of the screen. By clicking the star and making it black, it will add it to this provider’s favorites for future use.
Secondly, you can go to the Prescription Report:
This is the Prescription Report screen:
You will need to type in a Signature Password, as shown above.
There are now four options to proceed:
To send your prescription(s), simply click the Send button. If you click Send & Print, it will give you a printable screen with the option to print the prescription(s). Print Don’t Send will create a paper prescription. Sign Don’t Send will just add the prescription(s) to the list.
Providers are able to prescribe controlled substances. During the process, providers will be prompted to enter two DEA pieces of information after signing the prescription. Once the information is entered, the prescription will process.
From within the Prescription Report, you can do many different searches, depending on the fields you choose:
Pharmacy messages can be found in the upper right-hand corner of this screen:
Other messages can be found in the “bell” icon:
